Advanced Peer Support Training

The West Coast Post-trauma Retreat (WCPR) Program has been recognized by The Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) as an Advanced Peer Counseling Class. WCPR is the only advanced peer counseling class approved by POST. It has been approved as a 6 day, 44 hour class. At the retreat the peer support member will work with clients attending the program, participate in staff meetings and attend classes. This training offers the student a unique opportunity to work in a residential trauma recovery program under the supervision of clinicians and experienced peer support members. The WCPR program only serves emergency responders.

There is no cost to attend the program and the room and board are free. The only cost to an agency will be the person’s time and personal transportation.

To attend the program as training a peer will need:

  • Basic Peer Counseling Class
  • At least two years experience as a peer counselor with a law enforcement or fire fighting agency
  • A letter of recommendation from a supervisor
  • A telephone interview with the peer coordinator and any additional person the peer coordinator deems appropriate.

WCPR reserves the right to not accept any individual deemed to be inappropriate for the course. The client's needs come first.

Due to space limitations only 3 peer counselors through POST can attend per session. We hold 11 sessions per year.

The San Rafael Police Department has agreed to manage the POST paper work.

If you are interested please call (415) 721-9789 and ask for the peer coordinator to contact you.
